Teacher Resume Keywords for ATS

Teaching resumes need grade level, subject, certification, and evidence of classroom practice. The job post tells you which of those details the district or school screens for first.

A teacher resume is not only a list of subjects. Hiring teams look for certification, grade level, classroom management, lesson planning, assessment, and communication with families. The exact language changes between districts, grade bands, and specialist roles.

Show the context behind each claim. A lesson-planning bullet is stronger when it names the grade, subject, and student need it addressed.

Keyword clusters for Teacher resumes

Start with the clusters that match the job post. A term belongs on your resume only when it accurately describes your experience.

Instruction

  • lesson planning
  • curriculum development
  • differentiated instruction
  • classroom management
  • student assessment
  • small-group instruction
  • literacy
  • mathematics

Student support

  • IEP
  • 504 plan
  • English learners
  • student engagement
  • behavior support
  • parent communication

Credentials and tools

  • state teaching license
  • teaching certification
  • Google Classroom
  • Canvas
  • Schoology
  • student data

Use with judgment: a keyword list is not a script. If you have not used a tool, held a license, or owned an outcome, leave it out or describe the transferable part honestly.

How to use these keywords without stuffing

  1. Read the job post first. Highlight repeated tools, skills, credentials, and outcomes. Those terms matter more than a generic list.
  2. Put the strongest terms in context. Use them in a summary, a skills section, and at least one experience bullet when true.
  3. Keep the human sentence. A bullet should explain what you did, for whom, and what changed. Keywords support the evidence; they do not replace it.
  4. Check the extracted text. Run the resume through the browser checker and confirm that the important terms survived parsing.

Example summary to edit

Teacher with [grade or subject] experience planning standards-aligned lessons, assessing student progress, and communicating with families. Licensed in [state] and comfortable using [learning platform].

This is a writing example, not a claim about your background. Replace every bracket or placeholder with a real detail, and delete anything you cannot discuss in an interview.

Example bullet formulas

  • Planned and delivered [subject] lessons for [grade level], using [method] to support students with different needs.
  • Used [assessment or data source] to adjust small-group instruction and track progress toward [standard or skill].
  • Communicated with families through [channel] and documented [type of support] for students and staff.

Keep the structure, not the placeholder. A useful formula is: action + object + method or tool + result or scope.

ATS notes for Teacher resumes

  • Put your license, state, grade band, and subject near the top if they are required by the posting.
  • Use the district's exact grade and subject language when it matches your experience.
  • Name the learning management system and assessment tools only if you have used them.
  • Protect student privacy. Do not include names, IEP details, or other identifying information.

Questions about Teacher resume keywords

Should I include student teaching on my resume?

Yes, especially for early-career teachers. Label it as student teaching, include the grade and subject, and describe the responsibilities you actually held.

How do I show classroom management?

Describe routines, expectations, interventions, or family communication in context. Avoid a vague claim such as strong classroom management without an example.

What if I am licensed in another state?

State the license you hold and do not imply reciprocity you have not confirmed. If you are pursuing a new license, describe the status accurately.
